Frontiers Planet Prize 2024
In 2024, SSPH+ proudly served as the National Nomination Body for the 2nd edition of the Frontiers Planet Prize, an international competition celebrating groundbreaking research that addresses planetary boundaries. This prize highlights scientific excellence that promotes Earth's stability and sustainability.
SSPH+ actively engaged its network of researchers and Faculty to encourage submissions. Eligible scientists were invited to nominate peer-reviewed research articles published within 2 years prior to the launch of the call. SSPH+ forwarded nominations to the International Science Council, which evaluated them against the nine planetary boundaries outlined by Professor Johan Rockström in his book, Breaking Boundaries.
Two SSPH+ nominations: “Benefit-cost analysis of coordinated strategies for control of rabies in Africa” by Prof. Jakob Zinsstag (Swiss TPH) and Colleagues and “Trend estimation and short-term forecasting of COVID-19 cases and deaths worldwide” by Dr Christine Choirat (University of Geneva) and Colleagues, were selected for further evaluation by the Planet Prize Grand Jury. This jury, chaired by Professor Rockström and composed of 100 sustainability experts, selected National Champions and three International Champions. On Earth Day (22 April 2024), National Champions were announced, with the top three International Champions later receiving CHF 1 million each for their affiliated institutions to advance their research.
SSPH+ is honored to support this prestigious initiative, which fosters innovation and collaboration in sustainability science, and looks forward to continuing its role as the National Nomination Body for future editions of the Frontiers Planet Prize.
