International Journal of Public health (IJPH) and Public Health Reviews (PHR) enjoyed another strong year in 2024. In total, the journals received over 1200 submissions and published over 260 manuscripts.
We said goodbye to PHR’s long-serving co-editor-in-chief Raquel Lucas, following a number of years of excellent leadership. We were delighted to welcome Ana Isabel Ribeiro as the new PHR co-EiC, as well as two new senior editors: Geneviève Chêne and Peter Francis Raguindin. IJPH also recruited ten new Associate Editors from eight countries in 2024, in order to increase expertise in key areas.
The impact factors (IF) of both journals decreased during 2024: IJPH now has an IF of 2.6, whilst PHR’s IF is 3.5. This decrease was part of a widespread IF decline in public health journals this year, which occurred in the context of the covid pandemic. Our explanatory letter on this topic can be read here.
The journals continue to use special issues as strategic tools to attract high quality submissions. We hosted six new special issue calls during 2024, including collaborations with EEPE (“The Health of Displaced People”) and ASPHER (“Disaster Health Convergence”). Our YRE training programme also launched a successful special issue.
Finally, the journals’ two APC programmes have seen continued success. Seventeen manuscripts were funded via the SSPH+ Affiliates APC waiver programme, which has been extended until the end of 2025. The swissuniversities funding for the GLOBEQUITY APC waiver programme for LMIC+ first authors is now coming to an end. To date, the programme has helped to fund over 100 manuscript APCs. It will now be replaced by SSPH+ discounts for LMIC first authors.
